GTCC Foundation announces 2 winners in annual Innovative Projects Mini-Grant Program

JAMESTOWN, N.C. (Jan. 30, 2024) – The Guilford Technical Community College Foundation has announced two winners in its annual Innovative Projects Mini-Grant Program.

The 2023-24 winners are GTCC visual art instructor Douglas Cason, who led a public art project, and Linda Whitlow, director of K-12 partnerships, who led That Spring Break Career Thing!, a three-day career exploration camp for Guilford County school students.

The two projects will each receive grants from the GTCC Foundation to cover costs.

The foundation’s mini-grant program was created to inspire GTCC faculty and staff members to identify projects and collaborations that will create or improve a college program or service to help GTCC achieve its strategic goals. The program provides grants of up to $3,000.

“The foundation receives many donations with instructions to use for the college’s greatest need or overall support of faculty and staff. The Innovative Grant process is one way we honor that,” said Pam Anglin, GTCC Foundation director. “Our faculty and staff are creative, resourceful, and insightful, and passionate about teaching students in an impactful way.”

With the $3,000 grant, the public art project will allow GTCC students to complete a temporary and freestanding mural on one of the college campuses. They can also participate in a discussion with a visual artist who works in public art and witness a demonstration of the artist’s work.

Fifty students from Guilford County Schools will participate in That Spring Break Career Thing!, a three-day camp scheduled for March 25-27 with the support of the $2,300 grant.

The students will spend time in one of 16 technical program classes with faculty members and GTCC students. They will also explore career options by attending the GTCC Career Fair and a workplace lunch in the college’s culinary department learning basic etiquette.
