Simpson promoted to dean of science, technology, engineering and mathematics at GTCC

“I’m excited to be in my new role as dean of STEM at GTCC because of the people,” Anne Simpson says of her promotion.

JAMESTOWN, N.C. (May 23, 2024) – Anne Simpson, who has spent almost a decade as a professor and administrator at Guilford Technical Community College, has been named the dean of the college’s science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) programs.

In her new role she will be responsible for the leadership and strategic planning for the curriculum, academic assessment, budgeting, and more for the following programs: biology, chemistry, computer science/technologies, engineering, physics/astronomy, geology, and mathematics.

Most recently Simpson served as the interim dean of STEM at GTCC, a role she began in July of 2023.

“I’m excited to be in my new role as dean of STEM at GTCC because of the people,” Simpson said. “I’m enjoying learning more about the programs in STEM and all the amazing things the faculty, staff, and students are doing. I’m really looking forward to working with the faculty and staff and helping grow the programs in STEM.”

Prior to becoming the interim dean of STEM, Simpson was an associate professor of physics and the department chair of GTCC’s engineering, astronomy, and physics department.

“Anne has been an integral part of the GTCC community for a long time both in and out of the classroom,” said Beth Pitonzo Ph.D., GTCC’s senior vice president of instruction. “With her knowledge of the programs and disciplines and her understanding of GTCC, she is a perfect fit to lead the college’s STEM programs.”

Simpson earned a Master of Science in biomedical engineering from the Virginia Tech-Wake Forest University School of Biomedical Engineering and Sciences, a Master of Science in physics from Wake Forest University, and a Bachelor of Science in physics from Bethany College.
