The GTCC Health and Physical Education classes align with general education elective courses and prepare you for transfer to undergraduate BS degree programs that emphasize career pathways in related areas of kinesiology, exercise science, sports medicine, health promotion and wellness. These career pathways are becoming more and more crucial as preventative measures offered through these affiliated degrees intersect both the healthcare and medical communities.
The GTCC Health and Physical Education courses on the Jamestown campus are taught at the Mary Perry Ragsdale YMCA. Note: Jamestown YMCA classes may include a facility membership. The GTCC Health and Physical Education program is an open enrollment program. Particular second year biology courses of anatomy and physiology should be factored into program mapping.
There are no initial supplies required. In the later stages of the program certain opportunities will be provided for industry certifications and credentials that may require additional registration/application fees.
Kinesiology, taken from the Greek words kinesis (movement) and kinein (to move), is the science and study of human movement. Kinesiology also often referenced as exercise and sport science focuses on physical activity and applies scientifically based principles to the analysis, preservation, enhancement and rehabilitation of human movement in relation to life activities.

There are certifying organizations such as the American College of Sports medicine (ACSM), National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), American Council on Exercise (ACE), and Functional Movement Systems (FMS). Depending on a student’s proficiency and academic degree level, he or she may be eligible at either the associates and/or bachelor degree level for various certifications. Licensure could come as a part a bachelor transfer program as in Sports Medicine for a Certified Athletic Trainer designation or in a Physical Therapy program as a Physical Therapy or Physical Therapy Assistant.
