Emergency Medical Science – Occupational Extension
The Emergency Medical Science – Occupational Extension is one part of a larger EMS department here at GTCC. This department provides our community and students with a variety of emergency medical courses including CPR, First Aid, Emergency Medical Technician, and Tactical EMS. CPR & First Aid
Healthcare Provider CPR is designed for those involved in healthcare or first response. Heartsaver CPR is designed for the general public. The cost for each course is $78.
NOTE: Students will not receive a confirmation of registration. If your form of payment is charged, the student is registered for the course.
Students are encouraged to buy a student handbook for the appropriate class at the GTCC bookstore or online. Students will also be required to download a free app to their phones for use in class: QCPR Learner (Apple App Store, Google Play). Certification cards will be emailed to students within 21 days of class completion. Questions about certification cards may be emailed to Maggie Bull, Training Center Coordinator, at mebull@gtcc.edu.

Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
- Important: All students must bring a copy of their high school (or higher) diploma, GED, or CASUS Reading Assessment results (score grade 11 or higher), and a valid driver's license to the first class meeting.
- Registration fee: $204.50, due at the time of registration.
- Required Textbook: "Emergency Care," 14th Edition (ISBN: 9780136681168), $111.99. Can only be purchased from Pearson Publishing. Students are encouraged to buy the book two weeks before the class start date. (An electronic version of the book is acceptable).
- Required EMS Testing: $60, EMT – (due on first day of class)
- Required Clinical Uniform: $85 (approximate cost). This is required before starting the field internship. Information will be given on the first day of class.
Information about EMT course schedules, clinicals, EMS testing, etc., will be given to the student on the first day of class. No information will be emailed to the student before the start of the course.
Fee-Waived Eligible Students:
Students currently affiliated as an employee or volunteer with a state, county, or municipal public safety agency may be eligible for a waiver of the registration fee. Please contact the EMS Department at gtccems@gtcc.edu with questions.

Advanced EMT
- Pre-requisites: Valid Driver's license. Current NC EMT credential. College Transcripts (Math & English) or CASUS Math & Reading Test. (To schedule, email gtccems@gtcc.edu).
- Registration fee: $204.50. Due at the time of registration.
- Required Textbook: Advanced EMT: A Clinical Reasoning Approach with MyBradyLab access, 2024 Update, 2nd Edition. (ISBN: 9780135322567), $174. Can only be purchased from Pearson Publishing. Students are encouraged to buy the book two weeks before the class start date. (An electronic version of the book is acceptable).
- Required Testing & Skills tracking software: $140
- Required Background check, drug screen & immunization check: $122
- Required Clinical Uniform: $100 (approximate cost). This is required before starting the field internship. Information will be given on the first day of class.

Advanced EMT to Paramedic Course
- Pre-Requisites: Valid driver's license. Current NC Advanced EMT credential. College Transcripts (Math & English) or CASUS Math & Reading Test. (To schedule, email gtccems@gtcc.edu).
- Registration fee: $204.50, due at the time of registration; and $409 due after the course starts.
- Required Textbook: Paramedic Care: Principles & Practice, 6th edition Volumes 1 & 2, $331. Can only be purchased from Pearson Publishing. Students are encouraged to buy the book two weeks before the class start date. (An electronic version of the book is acceptable).

Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) – Refresher
The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) refresher course is for currently credentialed or recently expired EMTs who require continuing education for re-credentialing.
This course is not a substitute for initial EMT education.
This course will be offered in a hybrid format as the student will only be required to come to the Jamestown campus for three days. The EMT refresher course meets all National Registry and North Carolina Office of EMS standards and consists of 80 total hours.

Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) – Continuing Education
GTCC is offering online continuing education for Emergency Medical Technicians. This education will be offered in module format each semester. The student will be required to complete all quizzes for each module offered to receive credit.
Prerequisite: All students must possess a current National Registry or North Carolina Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) credential.

Frequently Asked Questions
The Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) course is designed to train individuals to become emergency medical personnel. Students learn about emergency patient care in both classroom lectures and hands-on laboratory simulations.
Topics include:
- Patient assessment
- Basic life support techniques, including airway management and CPR
- Oxygen therapy
- Treatment of shock
- Treatment of fractures
- Management of medical emergencies
- Emergency childbirth
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be eligible to take the North Carolina and/or National Registry Emergency Medical Technician credential exam (additional cost).
All EMT courses require a minimum of 36 clinical hours, which occur in addition to and outside of scheduled class hours.
The North Carolina Office of EMS requires that all EMT students provide one of the following:
- Proof of high school or higher graduation in the form of a photocopy of the student's high school diploma, GED, or post-secondary degree
OR - TABE reading assessment scores of grade equivalent 11 or higher. The TABE is administered in the GTCC EMS Program office at no cost.
Requirements:
- All EMT students must have a valid driver's license and show proof on the first day of class.
- All EMT students must bring this documentation to the first day of class. Failure to provide this required documentation will result in the student being dropped from the course.
- All EMT students must be 17 years old on or before the end date of the course.
The cost for the CPR courses are:

Please note that the NCOEMS and National Registry EMT credential exam fees are not included in the price of this course.
The cost for the EMT Continuing Education courses:
Registration fee (if not fee waived): $78 per semester course
We offer EMT classes each semester: spring, summer, and fall.
Typically, we offer three schedules at different GTCC campuses:
- Two or three weekday evenings and 8 a.m.-5 p.m. every other Saturday
- 8 a.m.-5 p.m. every Saturday with weekly online assignments
- 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, and Friday
The duration of each class varies based on the number of hours the class meets each week. All classes are about 244 hours, including clinicals.
Typically, classes take one semester to complete – about 16 weeks.
