What is the GTCC Honors Program?

The GTCC Honors Program is designed for high-achieving students. The classes you take will provide a deeper learning experience than regular classes. Courses promote a culture of advanced academic engagement.

The program is open to students in an associate degree program who plan to transfer to university for a bachelor's degree.

Your participation will provide a richer experience that includes:

  • Guaranteed admission into the UNCG Honors Program
  • More scholarship opportunities and access to scholarships available specifically for honors program students

Eligibility to become a member

  • You must be a high school graduate.
  • You must be a new student or student in your first semester.
  • You must have earned a 3.3 GPA or higher in high school.

Program requirements

  • Must maintain a 3.5 or higher GPA.
    • If GPA falls below 3.5, students are allowed one semester to raise their GPA.
  • Must attend 75% of all Honors Program events, of which there are two per month, 60-90 minutes each, with one being leadership and professional development, and the other a social event with refreshments.
  • Must register early with Honors Program advisors (this typically occurs in the 1-2 weeks before registration opens generally.
  • Must complete a capstone project that focuses on enhancing your community or communities. The project can be on your own or with other Honors Program students. This typically occurs in your final semester or session.
  • If any of the above requirements are not met, students are expected to maintain communication with Honors Program advisors.

Application Checklist

Follow these steps to complete your honors program application:

  • You must be admitted or in the process of application completion to GTCC before applying to the Honors Program, plus have an activated GTCC account with a username and password.
  • The email addresses for two to three recommenders, who can speak to your academic achievements, community engagement, and/or character. Recommenders will receive an email to fill out a form that will be included in your application materials.
    • Recommenders are typically teachers, professors, managers/bosses, coaches, mentors, or others who can speak to the above. Note: Recommenders should not be family and friends.
  • A personal statement of 750-1200 words total, addressing the following three questions (250-400 words each):
    1. How would you contribute to the Honors Program as a member, during and after graduation, such as in academics, career, or your communities?
    2. What do you hope to accomplish by being part of the Honors Program, academically, professionally, and personally?
    3. What unique identities, experiences, and hardships would enhance your leadership potential while strengthening the Honors Program?
  • Interview with members of the Honors Program Committee. You will be contacted by Honors Program Coordinators once your application has been reviewed and moved forward.
